Describe the personal protective equipment (PPE) that is recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for use in the dental office.

PPE is designed to protect the skin and the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth of dental health-care personnel from exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material”.

PPE should be moisture proof and used for only one patient. Masks prevent aerosols from entering the respiratory system. Safety glasses that cover the eyebrows to the cheekbones and have side shields protect the worker from aerosols as well as splashes of oral fluids. Lab jackets that fasten at the throat and reach past the hips protect clothing. The jackets should have sleeves that protect the arms from circulating aerosol bacteria and have cuffs that can be tucked into the cuffs of latex, vinyl, or nitrile disposable gloves. Each of these items protects the dental health care worker in the office and prevents the worker from inadvertently taking bacteria home to family.
